The Story of Jesus

The Rich Fool

Once, while Jesus was teaching a great company of people, a young man called out to him: "Master, speak to my brother, for he will not divide his inheritance with me!"

Then Jesus said: "I am not a judge over you. Beware of covetousness, for a man's life does not consist alone of the things which he possesses."

And Jesus spoke in a parable:

"The ground of a certain rich man brought forth abundantly, and he thought: 'Where can I store all my goods? I will pull down my barns and build greater ones. I will take my ease. I will eat, drink and be merry.'

"But God said to the rich man: 'You fool, this very night you shall die. Then whose shall these things be which you have hoarded?'

"So he is a fool who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich in godliness. Therefore, take no thought for your life, what you shall eat, nor for your body, what you shall put on. Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap, yet God feeds them. Consider the lilies of the field. They toil not, neither do they spin, yet Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

"But seek first the Kingdom of God, and all these things shall be given you."
