The Story of Jesus

The Kingdom Of Heaven

Jesus used parables to describe the way in which the power of God could take hold of human lives and how it could grow.

He said that at first it might be like a mustard seed, the tiniest of all the seeds; but one which, when it was planted, grew into a great bush in which the birds of the air found

shelter. It was like the little bit of leaven which a woman would take and hide in three measures of meal, till presently the whole was leavened. It was like the growth of grain, which no man himself can bring about, but which goes on in his field by night as well as by day, whether a man works or whether he is sleeping.

And in the house Jesus gave to his disciples some more parables for them to think upon. He said:

"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure which a man found en in a field. He was glad when he saw it, but hid it again; then went home and sold all that he had and bought that field the treasure in it.

"The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant who was seeking precious pearls. This man found one pearl of great price. He sold all that he had, and bought the pearl.

"Once more: the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was cast into the sea, and took in fish of all kinds. When it was full, men drew the net to the shore. Then they sat down and picked the good fish from among the bad. The good fish they put away for safe keeping, but the bad fish they threw away. So shall it be at the end of the world. The angels shall come, and shall shake the wicked apart from the good, and shall cast them into a place of fire; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
