The Story of Jesus

Divine Healer

Nor did he teach only. In the synagogue there was a man with an unclean spirit." He cried out distractedly: "Let us alone; what have we to do with you, you Jesus of Nazareth? Are you come to destroy us? I know you who you are, the Holy One of God!"

Jesus looked at this distraught man, and he spoke to something deep within him. "Hold your

peace," he said, "and come out of him."

The man was convulsed, and gave a great cry, and the congregation said that the unclean spirit was tearing him and coming out. The real man was restored, and all the people were amazed, and they began to look one another: "What sort of a thing is this? What new sort of doctrine is this? With authority he commands the unclean spirits, and they obey him!"

Meanwhile the report of what had happened began to be read through all the region of Galilee.

From the synagogue Jesus went to the house of Simon and Andrew, and James and John also were with him. The mother of Simon's wife lay sick of a fever, and presently they came and told Jesus of her. He went and took her by the hand and lifted her up. At his touch the fever left her, and she began to wait upon all who were in the house.

The report of this also went abroad, and by the evening of that day at sunset, people who had relatives and friends who were sick went after them and brought them where Jesus was. It seemed as though the whole city were gathered together at his door. He healed many of these sick folk and cast out many devils."

Then when the long day ended, this day in which the power in him had been drawn upon heavily, he needed something more than sleep. A long while before the next morning dawned he rose up and went out of Capernaum into a solitary place, and there prayed.

Simon Peter and the rest of the little group of his disciples followed after him. When they found him, they said, "All men are seeking you."

He answered, "Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also; for that is why I have come forth."

So in synagogues throughout Galilee he preached, and healed people who were possessed of evil spirits.
