As the trial went on, Judas became greatly troubled. He had hoped that Jesus would free himself from his enemies by some miracle; but
Jesus was allowing himself to be helpless in their hands. Judas hurried to the chief priests and scribes, saying, "I have sold an innocent man! I have sinned!"
They looked at him scornfully and asked, "What is that to us?
You yourself must answer for your sin." Turning away they refused to take back the money they had given him for betraying Jesus.
Judas threw it on the floor of the temple and ran out. Finding a lonely place, he hanged himself.
