How To Be Great
It was time again for the Passover Feast at Jerusalem. Jesus knew
this would be the last one he would attend. He wanted to prepare his disciples for the things that would happen. He said, "We go up
to Jerusalem. The Son of man will be betrayed into the hands of the chief priests and scribes. They will condemn him to death. They
will take him to the Gentiles. The Gentiles will mock, beat, and crucify him. On the third day he will rise again."
But the disciples did not understand. They still believed he would become the earthly king of the Jews.
Then the mother of James and John came to him with her two sons. She knelt before him and asked a favor.
"What do you want?" Jesus asked her.
She said, "Let one of my sons sit on your right hand and the other on the left in your kingdom."
Jesus told James and John, "You don't know what you ask for. Can you drink from the cup that I drink of and be baptized with
the baptism that I am baptized with?"
"We are able," they answered.
Jesus said, "That is true, but it is not mine to give the places on my right hand and on my left. They shall be given to those for
whom my Father has prepared them."
When the other disciples found out what James and John had wanted, they were angry. Why should James and John ask to be
honored above them?
Jesus called his disciples and told them, "You know the rulers of the Gentiles have great authority. It shall not be the same among
you. Whoever wants to be great among you, let him be your minister. Whoever wants to be chief among you, let him be your servant. Even
the Son of man did not come to be ministered unto, but to minister and to give his life a ransom for many."
As Jesus and his disciples left Jericho a great crowd followed.
