Mary and Martha, were the sisters of Lazarus.
All three were friends of Jesus. He spent many hours in their company.
Jesus went one day into the village where they lived to stay for a while in
their house. Martha was working inside the house. Mary her sister also was there, and she sat at Jesus' feet and listened to his words.
Martha was distracted with all of her preparations, and when she saw Mary sitting there, she was annoyed, and came
to Jesus and said: "Master, have you no care that my sister leaves all the serving to me? Tell her to come and help me."
But he answered her: "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled
about many things. Only one thing is needful. It is Mary who has made the good choice, and it shall not be taken away
The companionship of Mary's spirit meant more to Jesus than the food which Martha was so busy to prepare. A shadow
lay upon the road ahead. He was about to enter Jerusalem where he would be
beaten and slain.
